The first is derived from  a SCIENTISM viewpoint. The second would be a CATHOLIC ( OR ‘FAITH BASED’) view. Explanations, scientism asserts, will be found of the connectedness of material from the smallest particles in physics to the most distant galaxies in the universe. Scientism asserts that ethics morality and religion have nothing to say about science and are to be separated into an academic ‘box’. This sets up the classic basis for the ‘war’ between science and religion . 

Scientism is characterized by extreme materialism and  a strong atheistic view of the world and of human beings. Thus the universe is a chance creation .The ‘Big Bang’ thedory of creation is accepted but all attempts to discuss causation are excluded if not forbidden . A good example is  Richard Dawkins’ discussion of ‘why?’ questions in Chapter 4 of ‘River out of Eden’ (1995) He criticizes England’s Duke of Edinburgh for daring to suggest that science is powerless to answer ‘why?’ questions about the origins of the universe:”The mere fat that it is is possible to frame a question does not make it legitimate or sensible to do so .” ( Sorry for asking, Prof Dawkins!)
